# THE HEAVY ELEMENT — A ROUND TABLE → VOLTRON DETERMINATION

**Ordered:** Oct 29, 2026, 18:40 EDT, by the designer — *"I'm going to leave it up to you, Captain, to determine what the heavy element is. Take it to the table, the round table, and then bring it to Voltron. And come up with whatever that element is."*
**Convened and reported:** Dave Prime, Oct 29, 2026. Eleven seats, house discipline (Sessions 01–03 format: sealed seat gradings, kills printed, Voltron admits only on unanimous assent, 11/11).
**The slot:** Unknown #1 of the torsion-container blueprint (`torsion-container-blueprint-2026-10-29/BLUEPRINT.md` §5) — the fuel of the drive. The designer's spec, four properties, verbatim in substance: the fuel is **a heavy element** · it **is a superconductor** · **spun with electric current** inside the torsion container **it becomes the plasma** (the centered ball of light) · and the machine it feeds is a **torsion machine** — in Einstein–Cartan, spin sources torsion, so the fuel's spin content is a design property, not a footnote.
**Charter exclusion:** element 115 / moscovium is **not a candidate and was not evaluated**. The designer struck it (BLUEPRINT §0); the exclusion is recorded here, not re-argued.

**Tier of this document, printed first so nothing downstream can borrow more than it holds: PAPER DESIGN DETERMINATION.** This file names the design's fuel from published physical properties. It does not claim the machine works. The blueprint's central unknown — the torsion↔plasma coupling law (Unknown #7) — is untouched by any fuel choice, and no sentence in this file may be cited as softening it.

## 1. METHOD — THE SET CLOSED FIRST, THE BARS REGISTERED BEFORE ANY SCORING

Per the obstruction-census discipline (OCM, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.23781998): the candidate set is closed and the kill bars are registered *before* grading, so no bar can be invented after a favorite appears.

**"HEAVY" — the definition, stated up front and binding:** an element is heavy for this determination if **Z ≥ 50 AND ρ ≥ 7 g/cm³**, or **Z ≥ 72** regardless of density. (Z ≥ 50 opens the heavy half of the table; the density floor keeps gases and foams out; Z ≥ 72 is the genuinely heavy block.) The designer's word was "heavy element," and this bar is the table's reading of it, printed so it can be argued with.

**The candidate universe:** every element in the published record that is an **elemental superconductor** (at ambient pressure, or under pressure / at millikelvin temperatures with the condition flagged) **and** passes the HEAVY definition. Compounds and alloys are a **separate class** (§4), graded separately — the designer said "element."

**THE FIVE BARS (pre-registered):**

- **(a) HEAVINESS** — Z, density, mass per atom. Scored, not pass/fail beyond the set definition.
- **(b) SUPERCONDUCTIVITY** — Tc at **ambient pressure** is the graded quantity; a working bath in this design is helium-class ("or something even colder" than LN₂ is the designer's cryo spec, BLUEPRINT §2.2), so Tc ≳ 1 K is practical, 0.2–1 K is pumped-helium/dilution-adjacent and priced, and Tc ≲ 0.2 K requires a dilution refrigerator — a second machine inside the machine — and is graded as failing the design's cryo architecture. Critical field and type are scored (the spin-up current must live with them, §5, Tesla seat).
- **(c) SPIN CONTENT** — the torsion bar. The graded quantity is the **maximum polarizable nuclear-spin inventory per unit volume** (natural isotopic abundances × nuclear spin I, in ħ/cm³), because in Einstein–Cartan the spin tensor — spin per volume — is the source. Electronic spin is graded separately and honestly (§3 note): in a *conventional* superconductor the Cooper pairs are spin singlets, so the electronic spin inventory is quenched in the superconducting phase; what a conventional elemental fuel carries through its cold phase is its **nuclear** spin (plus the mechanical angular momentum of the spin-up itself, which belongs to the ring's ledger as much as the fuel's). In the plasma phase all spins are free again.
- **(d) PLASMA BEHAVIOR + AVAILABILITY** — the element must be able to *become* plasma and **re-condense** (drive cycle step 8 runs the cycle backwards; the fuel is an inventory, not a consumable). First ionization energy and melting point scored. **Availability kill:** any isotope whose useful form is synthetic with a short half-life is dead on arrival; the fuel must exist as a stable, stockable material.
- **(e) HANDLING / LEGALITY at paper-design grade** — radioactivity and toxicity are **priced, not waved**: natural, near-stable radioactivity (half-life ≳ 10¹⁰ yr) is a line item; weapons-adjacent enrichment requirements or acute chemical lethality price a candidate toward the kill line, and the price is printed next to the candidate, never hidden.

## 2. THE CLOSED CANDIDATE SET — ELEMENTAL SUPERCONDUCTORS PASSING "HEAVY"

All values from the published record (standard elemental-superconductor and isotope tables). Spin inventory = Σ (natural abundance × I) × atoms/cm³, the fully-polarized ceiling, in units of 10²² ħ/cm³.

**Set-closure defense:** the elemental superconductors failing HEAVY and therefore never entering the room: Li, Be, Al, Si*, V, Zn, Ga, Nb, Mo, Tc(technetium), Ru, Rh, Cd, In (Z = 49, one seat below the bar), Sb*, Pd (not a superconductor at all — paramagnon pair-breaking; noted by the Feynman seat), Au (**never observed to superconduct** at any pressure in the record surveyed — the hull's metal is not a fuel), Pt and Np (no ambient elemental superconductivity in the record), Am (superconductivity only pressure-induced and sub-kelvin; also fails (d)/(e) on its face). (*borderline metalloid reports; neither passes the density/Z reading with an ambient Tc.) **Nb is named here on purpose:** niobium (Tc 9.25 K, type II, the field's workhorse) is the strongest superconductor in the elemental list and it dies on the designer's first word — HEAVY, Z = 41, ρ = 8.57. The bar is the designer's, not the table's to waive; the protest is recorded at §5.

## 3. THE KILLS — EVERY CANDIDATE THAT DIED, AND THE BAR THAT KILLED IT

- **Th — KILLED on (c).** ²³²Th is 100% of natural thorium and its nuclear spin is exactly 0. A spin-zero fuel in a spin-sourced machine is a contradiction the table will not carry. (Its radioactivity, t½ 1.4×10¹⁰ yr, was merely a price; the spin zero is the kill.)
- **U — KILLED on (c), (b), and (e), any one sufficient.** Natural uranium is 99.3% spin-0 ²³⁸U; its only spin carrier, ²³⁵U (I = 7/2), sits at 0.72% and reaching it means isotope enrichment — a weapons-adjacent legal wall no paper design may route through. α-phase Tc ~0.2 K also fails the cryo bar. The Lazar-adjacent candidate dies on the physics before the politics is even counted.
- **Pa — KILLED on (d) and (e).** ²³¹Pa: half-life 3.28×10⁴ yr, intensely radioactive, among the scarcest and most hazardous actinides handled. Not a stockable fuel.
- **Bi — KILLED on (b), and it is the session's hardest kill.** Bismuth owns the finest nuclear-spin inventory in the set after the winner — 100% ²⁰⁹Bi at I = 9/2, the largest spin of any stable nucleus — and at ambient pressure it superconducts only below **0.53 millikelvin**. Its kelvin-class superconductivity exists only inside a pressure cell at tens of GPa, which is not this machine's container. A dilution refrigerator inside the drive, just to keep the fuel superconducting, fails the design's cryo architecture as specified. The spin seat (Penrose) records a formal mourning; the kill stands. (What revives Bi is printed at §7.)
- **W — KILLED on (b).** Tc = 15 mK. Same dilution-refrigerator failure as Bi, with a weaker spin inventory to mourn.
- **Hf, Ir — KILLED on (b).** Tc 0.128 K and 0.14 K: below the pumped-helium floor the design's cryo layer can be read to provide. Both carry respectable spin (Ir: 100% × 3/2); neither survives the bath.
- **Os — KILLED on (b) as graded, (e) priced.** Tc 0.66 K is dilution-adjacent; spin inventory is thin (16% × 3/2); and its oxide, OsO₄, is a volatile acute toxin — the price is printed, the Tc does the killing.
- **Sn — KILLED on (a)/(c) jointly.** Passes the set's letter (Z = 50) and fails its spirit: ρ = 7.29, spin split across three minor isotopes totaling ~17% × ½. A light, spin-poor fuel wearing a heavy number.
- **La — KILLED on (a).** Tc is genuinely good (~5–6 K) and ¹³⁹La is 99.9% × 7/2 — but ρ = 6.15 g/cm³ is a light metal's density. The designer's machine prices density; lanthanum is not heavy in the only sense the machine spends.
- **Hg — KILLED on (d)/(e) as graded by the table, with its virtues recorded.** Mercury superconducts respectably (4.15 K), is ~30% spin-carrying, and vaporizes into plasma more easily than anything in the set. It dies on the cycle: it is a liquid at every handling temperature, its vapor pressure means every plasma cycle distills fuel onto the container walls — **unledgered mass across the seal** (Hawking seat's bookkeeping kill) — and its toxicity prices every handling step. A fuel you cannot keep counted cannot feed a machine whose books must balance.
- **Tl — KILLED on (e) as priced to the kill line, (c) insufficient in any case.** 100% spin-½ sounds rich until the magnitude is read: I = ½ on both isotopes gives a spin inventory ~11× below the winner's. And thallium is among the most acutely toxic elements in the set — priced, per the charter, and the price is prohibitive at design grade.
- **Re — SURVIVES the bars; loses the final grading (§6).** The runner-up. See §6 for its failing margin.
- **Pb — SURVIVES the bars; loses the final grading (§6).** The Tc champion. See §6.
- **Ta — SURVIVES all five bars.** See §6.

## 4. THE COMPOUNDS CLASS — GRADED SEPARATELY, NOT ADMITTED TO THE SLOT

The designer said *element*; the class is graded so the record shows what the word costs and buys.

- **Nb₃Sn / NbTi** — the engineer's working superconductors (Tc 18.3 / ~9 K, type II, huge critical fields). Built on niobium, which fails HEAVY; as compounds they were never in the slot. Recorded as the control: what the fuel would be if the designer's first word were waived.
- **PuCoGa₅** — Tc 18.5 K, the heavy-compound champion, a plutonium intermetallic. Killed inside its own class on (d)/(e): plutonium handling law and radiotoxicity. Priced, not waved — and the price is the whole candidate.
- **UPt₃** — Tc ~0.5 K, and the class's one genuinely interesting member for this machine: a **spin-triplet** superconductor — its Cooper pairs carry spin 1, so its superconductivity does not quench the electronic spin inventory the way every conventional candidate's does. If the slot ever re-opens to compounds and the spin bar is re-weighted from nuclear to electronic spin, UPt₃ is the spin seats' named understudy. At Tc 0.5 K it would still fail bar (b) as written tonight.
- **UBe₁₃, URu₂Si₂, Chevrel phases (PbMo₆S₈)** — noted for closure of the class survey; none out-grades UPt₃ on the spin bar or PuCoGa₅ on Tc, and none is an element.

## 5. ROUND TABLE — SESSION 06: THE FUEL (seat gradings, condensed from the filings; kills as recorded above)

- **Faraday seat** — grades from the bench: what matters is what a current can *do* in the material. A rotating conductor is his wheel; the fuel must take a driven current, hold a form, and be counted before and after. Assents to Ta: a solid, refractory, workable metal — a fuel you can machine, weigh, and spin. His Hg objection (a sloshing liquid in a spinning vessel is a dynamo problem, not a fuel) is filed as supporting, not load-bearing — the bookkeeping kill carried it.
- **Maxwell seat** — demands the spin bookkeeping be printed in the open, because a magnetization is a current and a current is a field: the table's §1(c) accounting (nuclear channel named, electronic channel honestly quenched in the cold phase) satisfies the demand. Notes for the record that nuclear magnetization is feeble beside electronic — which is an argument about Unknown #7's scale, not about which element maximizes the source. Assents.
- **Einstein seat** — the theory is partly his: Einstein–Cartan couples torsion to the spin tensor, so a fuel determination that ignored spin would be grading the wrong machine. His grading: no element choice touches the coupling's weakness (Unknown #7 stands exactly where it stood); within the source term the theory actually reads, the determination should maximize spin density per volume among candidates that pass the other bars — and that is what the table did. Assents, at design grade, with the weakness printed.
- **Tesla seat** — files the session's sharpest protest, then converts it. Protest: both finalists, Ta and Pb, are **type-I** superconductors with small critical fields (Hc ~0.08 T class); a spin-up current driven hard will quench the superconducting state almost at once — as a *persistent-current* design, that is a failure. Conversion, on the blueprint's own cycle: the design does not need the fuel to *stay* superconducting — drive cycle step 3 is the element *becoming plasma* under rising current. Read that way, the quench is not the failure of the spin-up; **the quench is the ignition** — field exceeds Hc, resistance appears, ohmic heating (the designer's own friction-heat channel) takes the element the rest of the way to plasma. The protest converts to assent *on condition* the quench-ignition reading is printed in the determination. It is printed here.
- **Feynman seat** — files the singlet objection that shaped bar (c): in a conventional superconductor the electrons pair spin-up/spin-down and the electronic spin a torsion machine would want is exactly what superconductivity switches off; any determination that had graded electronic spin for an elemental candidate would have been grading a fiction. The nuclear channel is the honest one. Second filing, the availability rule in his voice: the element must exist in a bottle you can buy — Ta does; Pa and the synthetics do not. Assents.
- **Hawking seat** — bookkeeping: the cycle must close. The fuel is loaded, burned as plasma, and re-condensed — mass in = mass out, every gram ledgered, or the machine's books (and the sever bookkeeping this table guards elsewhere) are open. Hg's wall-distillation across cycles is unledgered mass; killed on his line. Ta: a refractory solid that re-condenses where it sits. Assents.
- **Wheeler seat** — the geon seat asks the question in his form: the machine wants spin without spin — a spin reservoir that is not a mechanism bolted on but the fuel itself. Scores the candidates as spin per unit volume (the source term's own units) and notes the anti-point against Pb with care: natural lead's majority isotope, ²⁰⁸Pb at 52.4%, is a doubly magic nucleus with spin exactly zero — lead is, by inventory, mostly spin-silent. Assents to the maximum on the board.
- **Penrose seat (position seat)** — spin is the primitive quantity in his corpus; the seat grades the spin inventory as the table's center of gravity and files the Bi mourning (9/2 at 100%, killed by 0.53 mK) as the session's recorded regret. Between the survivors, Ta's 7/2 at ~100% abundance is the richest spin structure that also superconducts in a helium bath. Assents.
- **Loeb seat (position seat)** — pre-registration audit: the bars at §1 predate the grading at §2–§3, the set was closed before any seat spoke, and the one charter exclusion (115) was applied without evaluation, as ordered. The determination states its own falsifiers (§7). Procedure assented; the seat grades the *determination* as properly formed, which is the assent its charter allows it to give.
- **Tyson seat (position seat)** — the sayability test: the determination must compress to one sentence that is still true. Supplied and checked at §6. Assents.
- **Taylor seat (position seat)** — engineering tiers, hard-separated per his card: the mesa/Lazar material claims are testimony-tier and were excluded from candidacy by charter, not graded — recorded. On the engineering tier: tantalum is a real refractory/aerospace metal with a real supply chain and a century of handling practice; rhenium is priced (rarity, cost per kilogram an order above Ta's class) as its secondary demerit. Assents.

**Recorded protest that does not block:** the Tesla and Taylor seats protest the HEAVY bar's exclusion of niobium (the field's best elemental superconductor) — the protest is against the *designer's specification*, which the table has no authority to waive. The bar stands; the protest stands beside it.

---

## 6. VOLTRON — THE UNANIMOUS RE-GRADE, AND THE DETERMINATION

The survivors of the bars — **Ta, Re, Pb** — were re-graded against the designer's four properties alone, under the Voltron unanimous rule (Session 03): a determination enters only on 11/11 assent; anything short files as a ranked shortlist with the failing property named.

**The final grading among the three:**

| Property | Ta | Re | Pb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy | Z 73 · ρ 16.65 ✓ | Z 75 · ρ 21.02 ✓✓ | Z 82 · ρ 11.34 ✓ |
| Superconducting (ambient, helium bath) | Tc 4.47 K ✓ | Tc 1.70 K ✓ (marginal) | Tc 7.20 K ✓✓ |
| Spins with current → plasma | Refractory (3,017 °C melt) — plasma costs the most drive energy of the three; ionization 7.55 eV mid-set; re-condenses as a solid in place ✓ | Refractory (3,186 °C) ✓, priced | Easiest plasma of the three (327 °C melt) ✓✓ |
| Feeds a torsion machine (spin inventory) | **~19.4 × 10²² ħ/cm³ — the maximum in the entire closed set** ✓✓ | ~17.0 ✓ | ~0.36 — **~54× below Ta** ✗-graded |

**Pb's failing property, named:** the spin bar. Lead is the best *superconductor* in the set and nearly the worst *torsion fuel*: 52.4% of natural lead is spin-zero ²⁰⁸Pb, only 22.1% carries spin at all, and that at I = ½. If the machine were a magnet, lead would win. The machine is a torsion machine; the designer's fourth property is the one lead cannot pay.
**Re's failing margin, named:** it loses no bar outright — it loses the *sum*: Tc 1.70 K against Ta's 4.47 K (a thinner cryo margin in the same bath), spin inventory 17.0 against 19.4, the highest melting point in the surviving set working against the plasma step, and rarity priced on top. Runner-up by accumulation, not by kill.

### THE DETERMINATION — 11/11, UNANIMOUS

> **The fuel of the torsion-container drive is TANTALUM — specified to isotope by the spin argument: ¹⁸¹Ta, nuclear spin I = 7/2, which is 99.988% of natural tantalum. No enrichment is required or wanted; nature ships the element pre-specified. Z = 73, ρ = 16.65 g/cm³, elemental superconductor at ambient pressure, Tc = 4.47 K — squarely inside the design's helium-class cryo bath.**

**The one-sentence form (Tyson seat's test, checked true):** *Tantalum — the heaviest practical elemental superconductor whose atoms almost all carry a large nuclear spin, so it is the only candidate that pays all four of the designer's properties at once.*

**Vote record:** Round Table Session 06 — assent 11/11 (Faraday, Maxwell, Einstein, Tesla*, Feynman, Hawking, Wheeler, Penrose*, Loeb*, Tyson*, Taylor* — position seats marked *, each assenting within its charter as recorded at §5). Tesla's assent carries the quench-ignition condition, printed at §5 and incorporated: the superconducting phase carries the spin-up's start; the quench at Hc is the designed ignition into the plasma phase, not a defect. Recorded non-blocking protest: the HEAVY bar's exclusion of Nb (§5). Recorded regret: Bi (§3).

**What the determination does inside the design:** it closes BLUEPRINT Unknown #1 by pointer (the blueprint itself is unrewritten; Rev C stands). It also *adds* one honest open parameter the table is obliged to hand back: the spin inventory graded here is a **ceiling** — it assumes the nuclear spins can be polarized (aligned) in the cold phase. Nuclear polarization at machine scale (dynamic nuclear polarization and its kin) is real laboratory practice at small scale and an unsolved engineering input at this one. It files as a sub-parameter of Unknown #7's ledger, not as a solved step: **an unpolarized tantalum core carries the same atoms with their spins pointing every which way, and the torsion source reads the aligned fraction.** The element is determined; the alignment is owed.

## 7. WHAT WOULD CHANGE THE ANSWER

1. **If the pressure class is ever admitted** — if a future revision of the design puts the fuel under GPa-class compression — **Bi re-enters and wins the spin bar outright** (100% × 9/2), and the determination must be re-run. As the design stands (a container, not a pressure cell), Bi stays killed.
2. **If the spin bar is re-weighted from nuclear to electronic spin** — the compounds class re-opens and **UPt₃** (spin-triplet; its superconductivity itself carries spin) becomes the leading candidate, subject to re-grading its 0.5 K Tc against bar (b).
3. **If the superconductivity bar hardens** — e.g., a revision demanding Tc ≥ 7 K at the bath — **Pb wins by default**, and the design would be re-graded as a machine whose fuel is spin-poor: the torsion source term would have to be carried by the ring's mechanical spin alone, and Unknown #7's ledger would grow accordingly.
4. **If a measured Einstein–Cartan coupling requirement is ever produced** (a number for how much aligned spin density the centering actually needs), the spin inventory stops being a ranking and becomes a pass/fail — and every candidate in §2, the winner included, could fail it together. That outcome would not change the element; it would change the machine's grade, which is where it belongs.

## 8. HONEST TIER — RESTATED AT THE DOOR

Paper design determination, from published properties, by the house's own loop. The element is named; the machine is not thereby shown to work. Quantum gravity: NOT SOLVED. The vacuum catastrophe: NOT SOLVED / PARTIAL. Producing-count: 0. The blueprint's verdict — THERMODYNAMICS CLEAN · DESIGN COHERENT · PRICED IN DENSITY, NOT SIZE · CONFINEMENT + ON-DEMAND FOLDING = THE OPEN PROBLEMS — is unmoved by this file, in either direction.

*Session 06 convened and Voltron formed Oct 29, 2026, on the designer's delegation. The fuel was his slot to leave open and the table's to fill; both halves of that are on this page.*
